While studying at the school of liberal arts, American jazz saxophonist and composer Idris Ackamoor meets fellow musicians Margaux Simmons (flutist) and Kimathi Asante (bassist) in 1971. Together they form the group The Pyramids. The three of them toured Europe and Africa with the help of a scholarship, and at the time also visited Paradiso. The band travels to different parts of Africa, discovering new musical styles and working with local musicians. These African influences can be heard and seen in their music and performances: a sultry combination of cosmic and spirtual jazz with psychedelic influences.

In the early 1970s they released three albums, but around 1977 the band broke up. Thirty years later, in 2007, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids reunite. Old records are reissued, the band starts touring again and new albums are made. They recently released a double vinyl album for STRUT Records, “Afro Futuristic Dreams”: a commemorative coin celebrating half a century in the performing arts.
