South African Moonchild Sanelly is a groundbreaking musician, known for her unique sound and expressive style. Her musical journey began at a young age, influenced by her hip-hop producing brother and a mother who encouraged her to participate in dance competitions. This early exposure to music and performing arts provided the foundation for her artistic freedom and creativity.
In 2005, Moonchild Sanelly moved to Durban to study fashion, but her passion for music took over. She immersed herself in the local music scene and developed her versatility in different genres. Her unique style, ‘future-ghetto-funk’, made her a standout performer in South Africa.
With music centered around female sexual empowerment, she quickly found a global audience, performing at festivals such as SXSW and Glastonbury. After her successful debut album ‘Rabulpha!’ she collaborated with major artists such as Beyoncé and Gorillaz.
Her second album, ‘Phases’, a double album, documents a toxic relationship and the liberation that follows. The album combines genres such as amapiano, gqom, grime, pop, house and R&B, and emphasizes empowerment and respect for women.
