Enchanting, light and majestic is how Mammal Hands describes itself. The English trio from Norwich consisting of saxophonist Jordan Smart, pianist Nick Smart and percussionist Jesse Barrett brings a refreshingly original sound honed from diverse influences. Mammal Hands draw from their love of electronic, contemporary classical, folk and jazz music. How brothers Jordan and Nick Smart lay down the melody lines and childhood friend Jesse Barrett connects the rhythmic patterns to them remains inimitable. The compositions evolve from minimalist to bombastic, and the band takes its time to draw the listener into a new world. Mammal Hands’ fifth album, “Gift from the Trees,” offers a fresh take on the trio’s unique music. The album was released on Matthew Halsall’s label, Gondwana Records, where GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet, among others, are also signed.
