Lezaam Beets is a South African trombonist, composer, and bandleader based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Born and raised in Cape Town, Lezaam relocated to Amsterdam in 2021 to study at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Since then, he has established himself as an active voice within the Dutch and international jazz scene through performances, recordings, and collaborations with some of the most respected musicians and ensembles in contemporary jazz. His music draws from a wide range of influences, combining contemporary jazz, South African jazz traditions, West African rhythmic concepts, spoken word, and spiritual reflection. Inspired by artists such as Bheki Mseleku, Abdullah Ibrahim, Nduduzo Makhathini, Kenny Garrett, Gerald Clayton, and Shabaka Hutchings, his work explores themes of humanity, awareness, growth, responsibility, and connection. As both a performer and composer, Lezaam views music as a way of listening, observing, and reconnecting. His compositions seek to celebrate the beauty and complexity of human experience while encouraging reflection, compassion, and hope.
