Extend the Knowledge: Nduduzo Makhathini

You might know the South African jazz scene from world famous super stars like Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba, and Hugh Masekela. But there is a new generation that’s leading this scene.

It is incredible that a country with a complicated, oppressive history, has found a healing force in music. Nduduzo Makhathini is the new face of South African jazz, and he has spoken about this in this interview with Dutch podcast maker Andrew Makkinga, before his show at Super-Sonic Jazz Festival 2022.

“The first album I listened from the first note to the last note was John Coltrane’s Love Supreme.I felt the healing potency. It was coming from elsewhere and it motivated me: if this is jazz, I want to be a jazz musician.” – Nduduzo Makhathini
